Background
In 2014, Americanas S.A., one of the largest technological innovation platforms in the country, was already thinking about modernizing its legacy application (Web Store) for delivering products via online orders to physical stores, with a focus on increasing volume.
Three years later, the company began to invest in its journey to cloud computing, and together with the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 this transformation accelerated. Utilizing Getup's support for Kubernetes, they were able to transition their flagship monolithic application to the cloud with resources native to Kubernetes.
On Easter 2020, when Brazil was facing the most critical phase of pandemic restrictions, the company began to meet a demand for O2O (online to offline) orders, which had increased from 4,000 orders/day to 42,000 orders/day.
From there Americanas’ monolithic application was broken down into micro-services. By Black Friday of the same year 100% of the category was being transacted on a new platform (Maestro), with Kubernetes native resources.
In the midst of this challenge, Americanas S.A. hired Getup, with its expertise in Kubernetes, for support in the strategic and operational parts.
Currently, the company has 95% of its applications in the cloud and, according to Armando Reis, IT Manager at Americanas S.A., “this brings some advantages, such as autoscaling. We are able to grow, and to reduce application resources quickly, with lower financial cost”.
Reis also states that “running applications with Kubernetes speeds up the process, guaranteeing that the code will work in a production environment, requiring little manual action, and reducing life cycle time of application development and also reducing machine costs”.
